In 1924, a schoolteacher named Frank Stewart set out to make the best darn root beer anyone had tried. Turned out that root beer WAS the best tasting root beer anyone tried and he was an instant success. Fast forward to 1995 when Stewart’s launched Orange N’ Cream; it was about this time that Larry Strasser developed a taste for that creamy, orange blend and, as shown in his picture, he still enjoys orange
refreshment today.
This Eastport sailor's haven had us at "Hello". With a welcoming vibe and chock full of sailors from Annapolis and beyond, the Boatyard Bar & Grill is one of our favorite places to be. And we aren't the only ones - Coastal Living and Sail magazines named it as one of the "World's Top Sailing Bar - Restaurants", and Yachting magazine named it in their "Five Favorite Watering Holes in the World" - one of two in the U.S.! Proprietor Dick Franyo is a friend of ours (see his profile in "Our Crew"), and if you need another reason to dine at the Boatyard, it might interest you to know that they are a member of the 1% for the Planet foundation, a growing global movement of companies that donate 1% of their annual sales to a network of more than 1,500 environmental groups worldwide. Now that's a meal you can feel good about!
Aside from being the nicest and most caring person we just may have ever met, Lee Kriel is a tremendously talented lifestyle photographer. Lee is fairly quiet about her corporate work (a lot of which is for us!), but if you check out her hip website and blog you can see the beautiful work she does for families in the Mid-Atlantic region.
Think Pink for Pat. Russell & Mackenna is proud to join in the fight against breast cancer by choosing to donate a portion of the proceeds from sales of all furniture painted Pat's Pink, the swatch shown here, to the American Cancer Society’s Breast Cancer Research and Awareness Programs.
Amy Chapman Braun Fine Art Batiks provided us with great pieces which can be seen in some of our room shots. Check out there website at www.brauncreative.com.
Artist Liz Lind is an Annapolis favorite. Well known for her vibrant whimsical paintings and collages, Liz has managed to stay in touch with her inner child. Surround yourself with her work and you will too! We are proud to specify Liz's work for clients. Check it out online www.lizlind.com.
Looking for a life change? This could be the opportunity for you. The Jolly Dog, as seen on Lauren’s hat, is a fun-loving outpost located in the US Virgin Islands. It is a successful and thriving business selling "stuff you want" and, get this — it’s FOR SALE. The legend claims that the Jolly Dog ran, or rather sailed, his way to St. John to escape a volcano eruption, a la Jimmy Buffet. In celebration of this brave canine, the owners have created their homage to the spirit of the jolly dog in all of us. If you can’t take the leap, just pull up a seat and have a free rum punch at their web site www.thejollydog.com.
We met Lisa Boykin Adams (a.k.a. Lisa B.) at the world famous High Point Furniture Market in North Carolina three years ago. We immediately wanted to fill our homes with her uplifting lamp shades! Apparently, we aren’t alone because you can see Lisa's lamps installed in the girls' sections of Nordstrom Department Stores nationwide. We are extremely excited to have collaborated with Lisa on a collection of designs you can only find at Russell & Mackenna. Lisa B.'s lampshades come to life when they are illuminated; in Lisa's words, "Every brush stroke is woven into a pattern that glows with painterly delight."
Since the beginning Company C has supported us wholeheartedly. With just 3 of us working out of the garage, Company C Founder, Walter Chapin, had enough faith in our little business to lend us over a dozen rugs for our first catalog photo shoot. Clearly, it was a success! We now use their rugs almost excluively in our photo shoots and in our own homes. We cannot say enough great things about the high quality and rich color in all of their products. If you're curious, Lauren's all time favorite Company C rug design (shown here) is called Wendy's Garden.
Everything you wanted to know about Fluff, but were afraid to ask . . .
Q: Can I eat it straight from the jar? A: Absolutely! And hey, get crazy: forego the spoon!
Q: If I become an astronaut, can I take it with me into outer space? A: You can, but no one likes a copy cat. Fluff was aboard the Endeavor which launched in March of this year.
Q: Can I top off my holiday sweet potatoes with Fluff? A: Uh, oh, someone wasn’t paying attention in history class; the pilgrims were the first to use Fluff on their Thanksgiving yams. Since we firmly believe in American traditions, we say by all means, spread it on. Need we say S’mores?
Jill Soja has the claim to fame of having been a creative design associate at Russell & Mackenna but now she is business partners with her husband, Chuck (who, by the way, is an AMAZING CHEF). Together they own a very hip and happenin' (in a laid-back, coastal sort of way) bar and grill right down the street from us in Crownsville, Maryland. Next time you roll into Annapolis and are ready to check your ego at the door and veer away from the City Dock, go have a beer with Jill and Chuck at Lures Bar & Grill. Tell them we sent you! The food is always fresh — in fact, they don’t even have a freezer! Chuck recommends the Rockfish with Citrus Cream Sauce; Jill’s favorite is the Angus Beef Biscuit Burgers with all the fixins'!
Orion Creamer found his calling fresh out of industrial design school – literally. When he picked up the phone and it was Uncle Thom Vernon needing his help designing a perfect cottage fridge — retro in form but modern in function — the rest, as they say, is history! Check out BigChillFridge.com. They also have matching stoves and dishwashers that may look vintage, but come with modern functionality, efficiency and dependability. PHEW!
Bee Weems is the name of the 36 foot downeast cruiser style yacht featured in several photographs on our website. The semi custom yacht is owned by Weems & Plath. For those of you non boating folks, Weems & Plath is the go to brand for nautical accessories. We love their 7" Nickel Bell with Lanyard shown to the left. It's intended for a boat, but why not use one on your porch to call in the children from playing at the beach!
Celia Pearson of Pearson Photograpy is the artist behind the camera for many of the interior room shots on our web site and in our print catalog. Celia's fine art (see Well Rounded Sea Glass to the left) also illuminates some of the walls of our featured interiors. We always have a ball working with Celia, her assistant Shunichi Takashima (Shun) and her stylist Jennifer Lilly!
